The Bilby (otherwise known as a rabbit-bandicoot or long-nosed rat) lives in the desert regions of Australia. There were two species (the Lesser Bilby is believed to have been extinct since the 1950's) and the Greater Bilby is listed as endangered. The Bilby is nocturnal and is an omnivore (it eats plants and meat) and survives on spiders, larvae as well as seeds, fruits, bulbs, and fungi. There are national Bilby survival programs involving the breeding in captivity, monitoring and re-establishment of new populations.
